Melissa Boodoo is an award-winning Chinese-Trinidadian Canadian artist, author, and designer based in Toronto. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design with a Minor in Music & Culture from Toronto Metropolitan University. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Ontario, including the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery, and the Museum of Dufferin. Her painting series The Lotus and the Koi has received notable recognition, including Best in Show (2025) and the People’s Choice Award (2024).

Boodoo’s interdisciplinary practice explores how cultural memory is translated across materials, generations, and lived experience. Working across painting, writing, photography, textiles, and spatial design, she approaches each medium as a distinct but interconnected language through which inherited histories are continually reshaped. Rather than viewing her disciplines separately, she treats them as a unified system of inquiry where ideas evolve through movement and material transformation.

At the core of her work is an investigation into cultural inheritance and the shifting nature of memory within diasporic experience. Drawing from her Indo-Trinidadian and Chinese heritage, she considers how ancestral stories are carried forward, adapted, and reinterpreted over time. Her practice reflects an ongoing engagement with what is preserved, what is altered, and what is newly formed through migration and passage across place and time.

Recurring water-based motifs— koi moving against currents, lotus forms emerging from layered surfaces, and rippling abstractions—function as conceptual structures rather than literal symbols. They reflect processes of resilience, adaptation, and continuity, mirroring how memory and identity are shaped through change. Through intuitive gesture, layering, and material experimentation, Boodoo constructs abstract surfaces that hold accumulated traces of time and experience.

Her background in interior and furniture design informs a strong sensitivity to space, composition, and material relationship. This spatial awareness extends into her painting practice, where works are considered as immersive environments rather than isolated objects. Alongside her studio practice, she is expanding her work into writing, developing longer-form narratives that emerge from her visual research.
